Leading up to the Sprott Natural Resource Symposium from July 26th-29th, Sprott’s Thoughts is pleased to present exclusive interviews with executive team members of the conference’s Platinum Sponsors, an invite-only group of some of the world’s top resource companies.

In this edition, Sprott Global Investment Executive Jon Sebastian chats with Morgan Poliquin, of Almaden Minerals & Almadex Minerals. The two companies, led by the father & son team, Duane and Morgan Poliquin, have been exploring for precious metals in Mexico for 30 years. Founded by Duane in 1981, his son, Morgan, who earned a Ph.D. in geology, and now runs the companies.

During the interview, the ‘prospect generator’ business model was discussed, how the companies survived and thrived during multiple market cycles, and what’s next for the group.

For reference, a ‘prospect generator’ is a company which targets early stage geological anomalies. Ideally staffed by expert geologists, a prospect generator’s goal is to make an initial discovery—then sell a majority interest in the project to a larger company which finances the exploration & development work.

Morgan notes the group’s focus on Eastern Mexico, where over the course of many years of drilling low-cost exploration holes with company-owned drill rigs, they have built an unusually large portfolio of exploration targets—which can be sold or optioned to partners. It’s a large enough portfolio which may position the group to be a one-stop shop for companies looking to expand their own portfolios with acquisitions in this bull market cycle.

Discussing prior successes, Morgan shared background on the team’s gold discoveries made over the decades: The La Trinidad gold deposit, sold to Eldorado Gold Corp, the Santa Fe gold deposit, acquired by Homestake Mining, the Caballo Blanco deposit, bought by Timmins Gold, and the Ixtaca gold deposit, currently under development by Almaden.

Armed with a portfolio of thousands of exploration targets in Eastern Mexico and company-owned drill-rigs, the Almaden/Almadex team looks forward to continuing its history of making economic discoveries, and successfully optioning them out to joint venture (or acquiring) partners.

Generally, natural resources investments are more volatile on a daily basis and have higher headline risk than other sectors as they tend to be more sensitive to economic data, political and regulatory events as well as underlying commodity prices. Natural resource investments are influenced by the price of underlying commodities like oil, gas, metals, coal, etc.; several of which trade on various exchanges and have price fluctuations based on short-term dynamics partly driven by demand/supply and nowadays also by investment flows. Natural resource investments tend to react more sensitively to global events and economic data than other sectors, whether it is a natural disaster like an earthquake, political upheaval in the Middle East or release of employment data in the U.S. Low priced securities can be very risky and may result in the loss of part or all of your investment.  Because of significant volatility,  large dealer spreads and very limited market liquidity, typically you will  not be able to sell a low priced security immediately back to the dealer at the same price it sold the stock to you. In some cases, the stock may fall quickly in value. Investing in foreign markets may entail greater risks than those normally  associated with  domestic markets, such as political,  currency, economic and market risks. You should carefully consider whether trading in low priced and international securities is suitable for you in light of your circumstances and financial resources. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. Sprott Global, entities that it controls, family, friends, employees, associates, and others may hold positions in the securities it recommends to clients, and may sell the same at any time.
