Metals Monday: Gold Gets Pulled in Opposite Directions

Commodity Callout

Copper held its ground amid up-and-down movement from gold and silver.

Metal Price Update

Gold — Gold experienced some up-and-down movement over the week, starting just above $4500 per ounce, dropping to $4350 at one point and then moving up to around $4530 before settling just below that. A dovish tone from Fed Governor Christopher Waller cast doubt on rate hikes before jobs numbers pushed sentiment in the opposite direction, showing just how quickly things can change.

Silver — It was the same story with silver, starting at $66.50 per ounce, dropping to just under $64 and then moving above $67 before dropping just under. Markets are fickle in that way, but long-term prospects for commodities remain strong.

Copper — Copper kept in the same tight range it’s been seeing, between $6.60 and $6.70 per pound. Tariff worries continue weighing on the price and fundamentals continue to support its staying power.

Lithium Carbonate — Lithium prices rose and then fell after reaching a peak. It started around $22,800 per metric ton, climbed to around $23,800 and then ended around $23,200. Demand growth isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so further gains are likely.

Uranium — Uranium was in a tight range, between $89.35 and $89.50 per pound. It continues to be a “boring” investment choice in the eyes of the broader market but that could change as reactors are brought back online and more people wake up to its necessity. Continue adding it to your portfolio.

Company Callout

Hannan Metals (TSX-V: HAN)(OTC: HANNF) is starting September off strong with recent results from the maiden drill program at the Stavaträsk Gold Project in Sweden.

One hole was 59.6 meters of 1.1 g/t gold from 48.5 meters. This shows shallow, long runs of mineralization and is very likely a strong sign of things to come as drilling continues.

Next up, the company will determine which parts of the system to target for the best results. As the drills turn, the market can expect a flood of newsflow related to what they find over the course of the rest of the year.

The company’s management has taken past projects to fortune-making heights before and CEO Michael Hudson is going to use his 30+ years of global industry experience to do the same here.

And remember, while Hannan has all of this going on in Sweden, there’s still the potentially massive Previsto gold-copper project in Peru. That’s one underexplored project still undergoing permitting that has the potential to turn Hannan into a household name.
