Metals Monday: Holding Steady

Commodity Callout

Market conditions continue weighing on many commodities and copper continues to show resilience.

Metal Price Update

Gold — An energy-driven selloff eased, causing gold prices to recover over the course of the week. They started around $4168 per ounce and ended just shy of $4220. Gold still faces headwinds, but its long-term prospects continue to be strong.

Silver — Silver saw up-and-down movement that brought it back to where it started, around $61.10 per ounce. At one point, it fell to just under $59, so the rally was welcomed by traders and you should continue to add.

Copper — Copper continues showing resilience, holding around the $6.70 range. Its steady nature shows why it should be part of any commodity portfolio.

Lithium Carbonate — It looked like there had initially been some hope for lithium, as it moved up from its price of $18,300 per metric ton to just above $18,600. It then dropped back down to that previous level. These current levels are nine-month lows, but lithium is still a strong contrarian investment.

Uranium — Uranium dipped slightly, from $89.95 per pound to $89.70, and then recovered to $89.85. Even amid movement in other parts of the commodities sector, uranium demand is making itself known among traders.

Company Callout

Daura Gold (TSX-V: DGC)(OTC: DGCOF) is one to watch thanks to the beginning of a drilling program in Argentina. This new program will cover 1600 meters and 20 holes across four targets with one site, La Flora, receiving its first ever drill test. Historical surface samples have returned high grades so there is hope that the trend continues below ground.

At another site, Cerro Bayo, drilling will build on previous results that returned gold and gold-silver mineralization.

The money Daura is spending on exploration will help it earn an initial 75% interest with the potential to go all the way to 80% as per its agreement with Latin Metals. If the campaign is successful, Daura will have established a strong foundation for its work in the country while also supporting its ongoing work in Peru.

Given the long-term prospects for gold and silver, this is a company investors should consider for their portfolio, especially as it currently trades near the bottom of its recent range.
